Helping children understand big feelings through play.

two young children playing in the construction site area at Petite street play village. one is dressed in a hi-vis jacket, goggles and ear defenders and is pushing a wheelbarrow.

Have you ever watched your child act out something they've experienced? Maybe they're giving a toy a 'check up', recreating a family outing or pretending to be the teacher.

It might look like simple fun, but what’s happening is something far more powerful. This is emotional processing in action, and it’s all happening through play.

Play, especially role play, gives children a safe space to explore and express feelings. It helps them make sense of the world around them - from exciting new experiences to moments that may have felt confusing or overwhelming. Stepping into someone else’s shoes gives them a little distance from their own emotions, making it easier to understand what they’re feeling and why.

At Petite Street Play Village, we see this magic unfold every day. A child working through a fear of the doctor by becoming the doctor. A shy little one finding their voice behind a shop counter. These aren’t just games, they’re important steps in emotional growth.

Role play also helps develop empathy. Whether they’re nurturing a furry friend in the vets or solving a “problem” in the construction area, children are learning how to respond to emotions, both their own and others’. Over time, these imaginative moments help build emotional resilience, kindness, and understanding.

When children have the freedom to play, they have the freedom to process, learn, and grow. That’s why it's so important to us that we've created spaces where they feel safe, valued, and inspired.

Let them explore those feelings in a space designed just for them ✨
